Datafest: A sneak peek into the individual groups’ project ideas…

  1. Team Awesome: Assess campaign finance by looking at county-level voters, using demographic data. Will use census data, and election results to analyze if voters are voting by heart or money (socio-economic class)
  2. Team Black Cobra: Geo-locating data. Finding where and when contributions have been made. Goal is to seek patterns and insights from campaign finance; will broadly look at campaign finance data.
  3. Team Influence-Digging Gophers: Focus on looking deeper into this data that is already available. Looking specifically at companies, and their political strategy when trying to influence legislation.
  4. Team Z: Objective is to track top political donors over time, and using resources like the FEC, Open Secrets, and the Sunlight Foundation to get this information. Consolidating all the information that is out there into one resource.
  5. Team Big Freedia: Looking at Louisiana campaign finance. The who, what, where, when, why of Louisiana campaign finance, possible concentration on environmental politics in Louisiana.
  6. Team Text-Mining: Looking at the text of how and why politicians’ views on issues have shifted over time in relation to donors/campaign finance contributions. Using the Keystone Pipeline as a case study and will use the findings from that to further analyze the game of campaign finance.
  7. Team Health Care: Will look at the parties responsible for influencing populations against health care reform. If health care is in everyone’s interest, then why can the public be swayed otherwise? Will specifically focus on contributions of organizations and individuals who have instigated the movement against health care reform.
  8. Team Oatmeal: Auditing campaign finance. Looking at how campaigns spend their money.
  9. Team Cause → Effect → $ → electrodynamic → result: Cause and effect of big data, using an analytic concept framework. Will also use personality profiles and analyze external and internal influences of voters.
  10. Team Eagle: Visualize connections between funding and bills as they pass through Congress. How does money given to politicians affect the way politicians vote on bills?
  11. Team Most Excellent: Influence of out-of-state contributions on gubernatorial races. This will be accomplished by using an Influence Tracker and viewing election results.
  12. Team Frenemies: Look at organizations that individuals are donating to and find a way to recommend donors to other similar organizations. An attempt to drive more money into political elections. Want to create a recommendation system for political contributors and will link organizations to ones similar to themselves in order to increase cash flow.
  13. Team Gators: Looking at superPAC donors by location, industry, and past contribution records. Will do a deeper analysis in state-led superPacs.
